Tips for Packing Your Suitcase
Are you gearing up for an exciting trip? You’re undoubtedly thinking about what you should pack and how to fit everything you need in just one bag. I know there are many different ways to pack up your stuff, but finding ways to utilize space in the best possible way will certainly help you later. Use our tips for packing your suitcase like a pro.
Upgrade your luggage
How long have you had your current suitcase? Is it worn out with a broken zipper? If so, upgrade to some new luggage with divided sections, compression straps, 360-degree wheels, all the bells and whistles. You’ll find the luggage is easier to pack and makes your trips more enjoyable. It may be on the pricey side, but our go-to for great craftsmanship is Tumi. A favorite of mine in the mid-price range is currently TravelPro.
Consider using packing cubes
Whether you like this tool will ultimately depend on your packing style. However, if you love the idea of opening your suitcase and NOT having everything fall out, then keep reading.
Packing cubes are a great organizational device. They’re zippered compartments that allow you to separate clothing into different sections of your suitcase. Your clothes will be compressed and fit neatly into your suitcase. Packing cubes also come in different colors, so you can organize the type of clothing into a different color cube and find what you need without having to rifle through your whole suitcase. In a pinch, they can also double as a pillow, laundry bag, shoe bag, or cosmetics bag.
Packing cubes literally changed the way I travel. I highly recommend the Away cubes to keep you super organized.
Practice the 1-2-3-4-5-6 rule of packing
This is a simple suitcase packing tip that can keep you from overpacking while ensuring you have everything you need. For a 7-day trip, follow the 1-2-3-4-5-6 rule:
- 1 hat
- 2 pairs of shoes
- 3 pairs of pants (or skirts)
- 4 shirts
- 5 pairs of socks
- 6 sets of underwear
You may need to modify this concept depending on the type of trip that you’re taking. For example, if you’re heading to the beach, then your suitcase will likely look different than a business trip. Overall, though, it’s a good place to start.
Roll your clothing
Rolling your suitcase is one of the best packing tricks out there. It conserves spaces, reduces wrinkling, and makes it easier to find clothing when you need it. Even if you’re using packing cubes, try rolling your clothes in your packing cubes for more space than ever!
Opt for digital copies
Do you love packing books, travel guides, or other fun things for the kids to do while traveling? Do your best to make it all digital. Bring your phone, iPad, laptop, or Kindle, and keep as much of your entertainment on there as possible. The one exception is physical travel documents. While you’re unlikely to need printed copies of your plane ticket anymore, you should have physical copies of your passport if you’re travel overseas, and any other documents required by immigration/customs.
Final thoughts on packing tips
Once you’ve packed up your suitcase, make sure you take it for a test run. Roll it through your house, take it up the stairs, and do a weight check, so you’re not surprised at the airport. Your destination awaits and The Tropical Travelers can get you there!
