I have planned destination weddings for years, and I'll tell you something that surprises people: a destination wedding is not automatically the right choice. For the right couple, it is absolutely incredible. For the wrong couple, it can create stress before anyone ever gets on the plane.
Choose the wedding that sounds like you, not the one you think you're supposed to have.
A destination wedding may be perfect for you if...
You care more about having several days with your favorite people than having one very elaborate night. That's the magic of a destination wedding. Your guests arrive, everyone meets at the pool, there's a welcome party, people have dinner together and friends from completely different parts of your life actually get to know each other. Then you have the wedding, and the next morning everyone is back together talking about it. It becomes an experience instead of an event.
But you have to be comfortable with people saying no
This is important. Not everyone you invite will be able to travel. Cost, work, children, health, passports and schedules all come into play. If you will be devastated that a particular person cannot attend, think seriously about that before choosing a destination wedding. You cannot choose a wedding that requires travel and then be angry with people who cannot travel.
Don't choose a destination wedding because you think it will automatically be cheaper
It can be. It can also be spectacularly expensive. It depends on the destination, resort, guest count, events, decor, photography and approximately 400 other decisions you will make along the way. Choose it because you want the experience, not because somebody on TikTok told you it's a cheap way to get married.
A wedding at home gives you different advantages
You have more control over vendors, and more people may be able to attend. You can obsess over flowers, linens, lighting and the exact chair you want without figuring out how any of it gets onto an island. For some couples, that's heaven. For others, it sounds like a full-time job they never applied for.
Ask yourself what you actually picture
Do you picture one incredible evening surrounded by everyone you know? Or do you picture barefoot drinks with your friends two days before the wedding, your families having breakfast together, a beautiful ceremony overlooking the water and everyone talking about the trip for years?
Neither answer is better. They're simply different weddings. Choose the one that sounds like you, not the one you think you're supposed to have.
And if the answer is destination, choose the destination and resort very carefully. A gorgeous hotel is not automatically a great destination-wedding hotel. That distinction can make or break the entire experience.
